Designed as Salomon’s grittiest racing shoe, the first edition of the Salomon S-Lab Speed gave trail racers the aggressive traction needed for running over soft surfaces in a streamlined, racing package. As we look to the second edition, we see that designers kept many of the core principals of the original model, including the general midsole and outsole design, while updating key aspects to improve the shoes’ ability to handle wet conditions.
To deliver a low-to-the-ground feel, the S-Lab Speed 2 features a full-length compressed EVA foam midsole. This tooling should provide a rigid underfoot feel that will help the foot dig in to marshy and uneven trails without losing balance.
When racing through the muck and the mire, being sure-footed is the top priority, and Salomon’s designers took that to heart with the switch to Premium Wet Traction Contragrip rubber, a rubber that is specifically designed to grip wet surfaces. The heavy Chevron lug pattern adds to that effect and gives the underfoot plenty of traction.
The upper of the S-Lab Speed 2 has also been rethought with wet conditions in mind. The perforation-free wrap and anti-debris mesh tongue should drastically limit the amount of material that can enter the shoe. Sensifit technology on the sides of the shoe extends to the lace eyelets for a precise and comfortable fit, while the Endofit, sock-like bootie on the inside of the upper provides a secure hold on the foot. The shoe also features Quicklace technology with a lace pocket on the top of the tongue for quick and precise lacing.
