Swineshead 10 Race Report

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Swineshead 10km

The Good – another win in the bag and, apparently, the quickest time on the course for about a decade. Plus it was wonderful to travel with Serpentine RC; it's been a while since I've raced as part of a team and it was the icing on the cake that we were able to take away both the team prizes. I'm very much looking forwarded to the South East 6 stage relays in two weeks time.

The Bad – the time was, once again, slower than I wanted. I had aimed to run at half marathon pace for Ealing in three weeks time so around the 3.17/k mark. My legs felt awful from the start and I was solo after about 25 meters time trialling again. The previous two weeks (315ks with a good chunk of that above marathon pace) were taking there toll. I just about held it together for the first 8 miles (with the exception of a shockingly slow uphill k at around mile 4). Unfortunately as I rounded the corner with just over two miles to go it all went pear shaped which brings us on to...

The Ugly – My form went and the next 1700m were pretty shocking. A slight incline and a bit of head wind took their toll and I really struggled with the pace slipping to 6 minute miles which lost me a good 30 seconds. Here's hoping a few days rest with some easy running will mean I'll be ready for a 5000m on the track on Thursday.

Thanks to the organiser for a really well executed race and a lovely rural course and for Serpentine for laying on a coach there and back.
