A weekend of all things running
Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, Wolf's Pit Fell Race, Ian Corless, Trail Running Magazine and Nikki Kimball
On reflection, it's not too surprising my legs felt a little stale last Sunday at Wolf's Pit Fell Race. Thankfully, the sun was shining, the weather was fine and everyone was having fun.
This was my second Wolf's Pit, it is a typical fell race - You run up, along and then down again.
The week before the race I was asked by a friend if I could take Nikki Kimball, American Ultra-distance runner out for a spin in the Peak District as she was over to speak at ShAFF and wanted to get out for a run. If there is one thing a runner, who enjoys off-road running, should experience it's a quintessential British fell race such as Wolf's Pit.
Nikki's response to my suggestion was a very enthusiastic "Yes" (Thankfully!)
Hopefully the photo below (Courtesy Claire Maxted - Trail Running Magazine) shows the end outcome of Nikki's and my Wolf's Pit Fell Race... Smiles all around!
Nikki, Bauer Media's Steve and myself went for a spectacular post race run from Hathersage. It's days like today I fully appreciate the city we live in; the amazing scenery and terrain that is on our doorstep. We headed up to Stanage Edge, along to Higgar Tor and Millstone and then (due to time) dropped down the Hathersage Gala Fell Race route back into Hathersage. It was wonderful to see so many people outside in the sun. Paragliders, walkers, runners, climbers, boulderers, road cyclists and mountain bikers!!
Colemans Deli provided the entertainment for the rest of the day, we bathed in the sun and ate some tasty food. Another personal highlight of the day was to meet Ian Corless, I've been listening to his podcast Talk Ultra for a number of years now and to meet Ian in person was great. I held back the urge to quiz Ian on all things Ultra but did enjoy the running related chat going around the table.
We finished our weekend off with a trip to 'Running Films 1' at ShAFF. This was a collection of 5 short films, the one which stood out to me was Steve Birkinshaw's Wainwrights, for anyone who's after some inspiration and a lesson in suffering this short film is truly exceptional.
All in all a very good weekend!
Post race smiles for Nikki Kimball and myself.
